What We Support

School Innovation Zones Act

West Virginians for Education Reform supports the recent legislation passed called the School Innovation Zones Act.  We believe that this legislation will open the door to innovation and change for WV students.  The Innovation Zones legislation allows for existing schools to apply for waivers from policy, which gives schools and teachers more freedom.  West Virginians for Education Reform looks forward to the opportunity to work with students, parents, teachers and community leaders to implement the Innovation Zones policy.

West Virginia Charter School Act

West Virginians for Education Reform believes that charter schools provide for innovation, change and choice in the public education system.  We supported the West Virginia Charter School Act of 2009 and will work to see another charter schools bill in the WV legislator next session.

Teachers Union Reform Network of AFT and NEA Locals (TURN)

Teacher Union Reform Network is a union-led effort to restructure the nation's teachers unions to promote reforms that will ultimately lead to better learning and higher achievement for all students. The primary goal of TURN is to create new union models that can take the lead in building and sustaining effective schools for all students. Because teachers are closest to students, to the learning process, and because of their link to parents and the larger communities, we are in a unique position to stimulate the necessary changes. West Virginians for Education Reform is dedicated to bring TURN to West Virginia to encourage progressive unionism, raise the status of the teaching profession and improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools across West Virginia.

Site-Governed School Districts

WVER supports new legislation that authorizes creation of a new type of district public school which seeks to incorporate the autonomy, flexibility and accountability of charter schools into what are called "Site-Governed District Schools." These new public schools must be approved by their district school board. Their teachers remain district employees and teachers union members. And any deviations from the district master contract must be explicitly waived through agreements between the district board and teachers union.
